Narrative on IITs

IITs were set up to pioneer national efforts on research, technology advancements and innovative products. To address the malaise, Javadekar has an action plan, as below:

1. Govt is not willing to allocate more than the present amount of Rs 4000 crore.

2. Govt will instead hike fees to Rs 2 lakh per year.

3. IITs will be vastly expanded, to tap the depths of India.

4. IITs to be fully accessible to BPL and SC/ST and made more affordable to middle classes. Free comprehensive, online entrance preparation material.

5. IITs should provide much-improved living conditions, facilities and standards. Open to greater autonomy, new avenues of specializations, foreign faculties, etc

6. IITs will enhance international rankings by building prestige through quality and quantity of research papers, innovations spawned, knowledge hubs created and collaborations developed.

7. Graduates will be encouraged to remain in India by providing them grants for research projects.

8. IITs will be encouraged to be innovative and commercialize ideas, through start-ups and private sector involvement.
