Telangana has a vital water problem. It has contaminated water, drinking water shortage, drought-prone regions, emerging industrial sector and weak flows into Jurala and Srisailam dams due to upstream barrages on Godavari and Krishna (see link 1), etc. Hostility with AP is leading to friction with Centre and the Supreme Court. A huge Rs 24,000 crore has been committed this year to water. Govt's lofty aim is for full irrigation coverage, and for meeting all the water needs of spawning industries and townships, both around Hyderabad and in far-away districts. Opposition alleges rampant corruption citing top-down decisions, rushed re-designs, inadequate hydrology, higher projected costs and links with contractor mafia (see link 2).

1. Mission Kakatiya at Rs 20,000 crore, will repair 46,500 minor irrigation tanks over 5 years for extra 255 TMC storage. Rs 11,500 comes from state budget. It irrigates 1-1.4 mha. Tanks can improve groundwater and silt enhances soil fertility (see link 3).

2. Mission Bhagiratha at Rs 40,000 crore, will provide piped drinking water to all households in 3 years.

3. Palamuru project at Rs 35,000 crore over 3 years, will lift 90 TMC flood waters from Srisailam reservoir, irrigate 1 mha and supplies drinking water to 3 districts.

4. Dindi project at Rs 10,000 crore will tap Srisailam reservoir to irrigate 0.35 mha and supply drinking water to Nalgonda, which has contaminated ground-water.

5. Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation at Medigadda —having obtained consent of Maharashtra—will lift 300 TMC (net 160 TMC) from Godavri to supply new and existing projects in Karimnagar. It will irrigate 1.6 mha in 7 drought prone districts.
